Chrysler announces third-annual Detroit Autorama Design Competion for high schoolers

2015 Autorama Design Competition

Chrysler is always on the lookout for new design talent, and for the past two years it’s hosted a competition targeted to Michigan high school students. The Detroit Autorama Design Competition is back for 2015, but this year the automaker is opening up the field to include high school students across the United States; at stake is a grand prize that includes a $60,000 scholarship to Detroit, Michigan’s College for Creative Studies (CCS).

The competition is open to all U.S. public high school students in grades 10-12, who are asked to design the “next-generation Dodge vehicle for the year 2025.” Drawings must be done by hand in pencil, markers or paint, and on paper between 8 x 10 inches and 11 x 17 inches in size. Talent with a pencil alone won’t be enough to capture first place, however, as the second half of the entry requires students to submit a 500-word essay explaining what the Dodge brand means to them.

Entries will be judged by a panel of designers, including Ralph Giles, senior vice president of product design; Joe Dehner, head of Dodge and Ram truck design; Mark Trostle, head of SRT, Mopar and motorsports design; and yet-to-be-named industrial design faculty from CCS.

The first-place winner will receive the aforementioned $60,000 scholarship to CCS (assuming eligibility and admission requirements are met), along with an Apple MacBook Pro computer, a three-week summer design course at CCS (including lodging, meals and field trips), and three passes to the Detroit Autorama. The second-place winner receives the MacBook Pro computer, along with the three-week design course and admission for three to the Detroit Autorama; third- and fourth-place finishers receive a MacBook air computer or an Apple iPad, respectively, along with the summer design course and Autorama admission.

Entries can be submitted by email or U.S. Mail, but must be received by Friday, January 23, 2015. Finalists will be announced on January 30, and winners will be chosen at a special Cobo Center event on March 6, held in conjunction with the Detroit Autorama (which runs from March 6-8, 2015). Complete contest rules and information are posted on the Drive For Design Facebook page, and Chrysler promises that competition updates will be posted to the Chrysler Group Facebook page.
