As is the case with other air-cooled Porsche models, the 914 is climbing in value, and restored examples are now priced beyond the means of many seeking a fun weekend driver. The trick is finding a car that needs a bit of work, but still has a relatively rust-free body, and at a glance, this 1975 Porsche 914, for sale on Hemmings.com, appears to meet both criteria.
Described by the seller as “completely rust free,” the underside does appear to be in better-than-average condition, at least in the pictures provided. Though the paint looks shiny, it’s described as a “10-foot” paint job, meaning that it will need attention if the next owner hopes to add to his car show trophy collection. The 914 has sat for a few years, so it will need the usual attention to the fuel and brake systems, but such jobs are within reason for a competent hobbyist. With those flaws in mind, the price appears to be right, and if the car’s structural integrity checks out, it could be the basis of a fun restoration project. From the seller’s description:
Completely rust free original car, even sail panels and battery box are rust free. Does run and drive but has had very few miles in the past few years. Fuel has been drained, Fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs, cap / rotor and points replaced. Oil cooler seals replaced. dash is nice, seats good, nds carpets. recently painted in orig color but very poor quality, looks good from 10 ft. Car will need some tinkering or treat it to a well deserved easy restoration
