Toyota’s Cressida debuted in North America as a 1978 model, intended to add a bit of luxury to the automaker’s conservative lineup. Powered by a 2.6-liter inline six-cylinder engine that dropped carburation for fuel injection soon after the car’s launch, the Cressida came with standard features like air conditioning, an automatic transmission, power steering, an AM/FM stereo cassette audio system and enough sound deadening to make the car one of the quietest imports on the road. At a list price of $7,389, it was also more than twice as expensive as a base model Corolla, which explains why initial sales were sub-optimal. Not many survive today, which makes this 1978 Toyota Cressida, for sale on Hemmings.com, something of a rare find. The seller describes the car as semi-restored, with new tires and brakes, but admits that minimal rust is appearing through the still-shiny paint. There’s no guarantee the Cressida will become a desirable future collectible, but the car’s rarity should make it an interesting weekend driver for fans of Japanese cars.
