Long the butt of jokes about exploding fuel tanks (an issue corrected by a 1978 recall), Ford Pintos have developed something of a cult following over the years. Pristine examples are harder to find with each passing year, since most Pintos were used to death by a string of ever-less-careful owners. Those that remained were likely parted out or converted into race cars, since in SCCA ITB trim the Pinto was both affordable and competitive enough (in most regions) to keep things interesting. This 1976 Ford Pinto Runabout, for sale on Hemmings.com, seems to have survived the decades remarkably intact. Aside from the paint chip on the passenger door and a seller-declared rust spot, we can’t see much wrong with this 83,000 mile example, and the seller certainly provides a detailed enough description to attract the car’s next caretaker. From the seller’s description:
1976 Ford Pinto runabout, all original 2 door, 4 cyl, am radio, factory AC, automatic on floor, bucket seats with only 83,011 original miles in excellent condition! My video will be posted in a few days but—–second owner since 2011, garaged all it’s life with it’s original factory paint still shines like day one. This car has been maintained properly since brand new to include recent oil change & lube, total brake service, anti freeze check, full safety check & recent New York state inspection with sticker. My 1976 Pinto Runabout is very rare & waiting for you. My Pinto is all original and has ice cold factory air conditioning, hot heater, original am radio. The interior is all original and in excellent condition to include the dash (uncracked), headliner (not hanging as most do), seats (no holes), carpet (no holes) & door panels (minor ware drivers side but no holes), both sun visors sit tight & each have mirrors, the back seat goes down as it should, the original rear carpeted is intact & in nice condition, spare tire. The exterior is in excellent condition with no dents & one very minor rust spot (to be expected) just starting, a couple of parking lot dings easily repaired, paint shines like new, exhaust a few years ago with the converter still intact when most cut them out, no fluid leaks anywhere to include valve cover, recent battery & AC check, no frame rot as most have since this was always garaged, all lights & directionals work (see video when posted) to include license plate, back up & side runners & high beams. The 4 cylinder engine runs great and does not smoke! In the morning it starts with just one pump of the gas peddle & a turn of the key and stays running and when warm idles as it should.
