Buick Avenir Concept The Buick Avenir Concept could be the new flagship from Buick and it’s hot. This exquisite sedan was one of the biggest surprises of the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Avenir is a low-slung four-door with unmistakable rear-drive proportions and flagship presence. Buick explained that Avenir is French for “future.” GM global product development chief Mark Reuss—who knows something about Park Avenues, and many other past Buicks, having started his career with the division and being the son of a former Buick division general manager—said the Avenir “provides definite cues of what to expect from Buick in the future.” The concept has a V6 engine, a 9-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, driver-selectable suspension damping, and 21-inch wheels. At 204.5 inches long and 76.0 inches wide, it’s more grandly proportioned than both the Cadillac CTS (195.5 inches and 72.2 inches, respectively) and the Chevrolet SS (also 195.5 inches long but 74.7 inches wide). With all the buzz that the Avenir generation, we expect that it will find a home on GM’s upcoming new Omega rear-wheel-drive platform, as a companion to the Cadillac CT6. Infiniti Q60 Concept Infiniti’s Q60 concept builds upon the design language seen on recent Infiniti concept cars, carrying over muscular lines and well-defined contours to convey exceptional stance and presence. The Q60 made its word debut at the 2015 NAIAS and serves as a prelude of Infiniti’s next generation premium sports coupe. “The Q80 Inspiration was an indication of Infiniti’s future design language,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director. “The Q60 Concept is the next step in the journey. The striking Q60 Concept is designed to entice coupe fans with its sharp contours and hand-crafted interior, while at the same time suggesting performance and power to match. The result is a fantastic fusion of looks and speed. Honda FCV Fuel Cell Concept Fuel cell technology received government funding last year and a several carmakers are on their way developing fuel cars for the mass market. Honda brought their FCV hydrogen fuel cell concept to NAIAS and gave us a status report on the car’s progress. Improvements over the first generation HCV Clarity include 60 percent more power, a 33 percent reduction in size of the fuel cell itself, and an estimated range of 300 miles. All the improvements mean the FCV can be refueled in approximately 3 minutes (at a pressure of 70 MPa), which is less time it takes to fill up a gasoline car of similar size. With the fuel stack’s smaller footprint being pretty close to a regular combustion engine, it now fits entirely under the contoured hood of the FCV. Early output rating of the FCV is 134 horsepower and a range of approximately 300 miles. Hyundai Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept One of the most unusual concepts unveiled this year was from Hyundai. The Korean carmaker introduced something that looks like a compact pickup truck, but really isn’t one because it doesn’t have the payload or towing capacity of a true truck. The Hyundai Santa Cruz crossover truck concept (code name HCE-15) is designed to focus on the needs of the Urban Adventurer. Mid-size trucks sold in the U.S. today are generally too big and expensive for the young generation (aka Millennials) that lives in city and who have an active outdoor lifestyle where an external cargo area can be handy. Hence, the compact crossover with a small and versatile cargo bed was conceived for the urban adventurer. Power is delivered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel that is spec’d at 190 horsepower and 300 lb-ft torque, with fuel economy expected to be in the high thirties. Even though it has a small truck bed and low ground clearance, Hyundai emphasized that the Santa Cruz is not a truck and not designed for towing duty. Multiple capabilities beyond the format of a compact truck were the design goals and Hyundai’s HTRAC AWD system makes it suitable for traveling over more than just pavement and country backroads. Carrying five full-size passengers and the versatility to haul different types of gear seem to be the strengths of the Santa Cruz concept. No release date was announced. Our best guess is that the Hyundai Santa Cruz is at least two years away from going into production. VW Cross Coupé GTE Crossover Concept Volkswagen presented the Cross Coupé GTE, which is the third concept car representing one possible version of a mid-size SUV that will soon go into production. Together, all three concepts–the CrossBlue presented in Detroit in January 2013, the CrossBlue Coupe most recently shown in Los Angeles in November 2013, and the Cross Coupe GTE–represent just a part of the wide spectrum of SUV variants that can be produced off Volkswagen’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) architecture. At the end of 2016, Volkswagen will start production of one of its most important new models in the past five decades in Chattanooga, Tennessee: a seven-seater mid-size SUV. As a preview to this vehicle, Volkswagen is now showing the five-seater Cross Coupe GTE at NAIAS. This stylish and upscale SUV uses a plug-in hybrid system with a maximum output of 355 horsepower and an all-wheel-drive system that uses an “electric driveshaft”. The hybrid has a manufacturer-estimated fuel economy rating of 70 MPGe. The GTE acronym generally applies to all sporty Volkswagen models with a high-tech plug-in hybrid drivetrain. They offer the driving characteristics of a grand tourer (Gran Turismo or GT) and–thanks to one or more electric motors and a battery (E as in Electric)–they also offer zero-emissions driving. The Cross Coupe has a zero-emissions range of up to 20 miles and can reach 60 mph from rest in just 6.0 seconds. The car has various operating modes: E-Mode, GTE, Hybrid, Off-road and Battery Hold/Battery Charge. Mercedes-Benz F015 Luxury in Motion Concept Originally presented at CES in January, the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept made an appearance at the auto show in Detroit. The futuristic and ultra-smooth skinned capsule represents Mercedes’ vision of a fully autonomous rolling lounge that can be driven autonomously or manually. It features a windshield with an embedded electronic display and four lounge seats that can swivel so passengers can face one another. The F015 also features LED lights on the front and rear that change color based on the car’s driving mode. In addition, it can even let pedestrians know when they can cross the road safely. According to Mercedes-Benz, the self-driving, fully connected, hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid has a range of nearly 700 miles. With a full battery, the F015 is capable of driving up to 124 miles strictly on electric power. The battery range can be extended by using the hydrogen fuel cell to recharge on the go, to achieve a maximum range up to 684 miles.
