This 1924 Locomobile Model 48 Sportif was authentically restored from the frame up and had an asking price of $35,000 in the July 1973 issue of Hemmings Motor News. Introduced in 1911, the Model 48 would undergo very little change stylistically over its 18-year existence, though the output of its six-cylinder engine would grow from 48hp in 1911 to 95hp by the 1924 model year (and later, to 103hp). Durant Motors purchased Locomobile in 1922 and the Model 48 was the only car available for 1924, though the Junior 8 would be added to their lineup a year later. With a factory price of $7,900, the Model 48 Sportif was clearly marketed for the well-to-do citizens of the Roaring Twenties; by comparison, Ford Model T 4-door sedans were available for less than $700. It’s hard to gauge what Model 48s are worth today, but an unrestored 1923 Sportif sold for $176,000 in March of 2013 at Amelia Island. The $35,000 asking price of 1973 for this Locomobile would equate to over $186,000 today.
If you’d like to keep going Loco… here is an auction profile we featured on a 1922 Sportif in the December 2005 issue of Hemmings Classic Car and a Driveable Dream segment on a 1923 Model 48 that was in the March 2005 issue.
