Few racing facilities in America can boast as long and deep a history as Thompson Speedway in northeastern Connecticut. Its high-banked 5/8th-mile oval dates back to 1940, and its road course, which dates to 1952, was recently rejuvenated for club racing and track days. The facility also plays host to an annual three-day vintage weekend, which this year is set for June 18-21.
That’s a road course event, but the big news out of Thompson for its 75th anniversary season is that a second vintage weekend has been scheduled, this one for the high-banked speedway. The Historic Oval Invitational at Thompson will take place May 15 and 16. Virtually every type of round-track car that ever raced in New England ran at Thompson, and all of them are eligible to participate so long as the race car was built before 2000. That includes Midgets, Sprint cars, TQ Midgets, Supermodifieds, Championship cars and all manner of stock cars. The invitational also includes a show for hot rods and classics.
Thompson is a special-events facility, and now even includes a golf course and clubhouse. Find out more about this historic place at ThompsonSpeedway.com.
