What to See at the Henry Ford Museum

What to See at the Henry Ford Museum

henry_ford_museum_galleryfull If you love cars and history, The Henry Ford is a must-see location to add to your bucket list. This National Historic Landmark rests just outside of Detroit, Michigan in the suburb of Dearborn. The complete location includes a The Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, the Ford Proving Ground (Dearborn Development Center), the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, and the Benson Ford Research Center. The Henry Ford complex takes visitors through time on a rich journey of the history of the automobile and other inventions that change the way of life in the United States.

Henry Ford Museum The Henry Ford Museum holds true American treasures. One of the most treasured exhibit is the Lincoln Continental Limousine that President Kennedy rode in on November 22, 1963. The Lincoln Continental sits near the entrance of the museum. After the horrible events of the day, the Lincoln Continental Convertible was retrofitted with a fixed hardtop and covered with armor so it could be used by the Secret Service. The Henry Ford is also home to retired limos used by other presidents, too.

Along with Kennedy’s limo, there are several other unforgettable cars to see. One vehicle is the bus that Rosa Parks rode in when she made the gutsy decision to sit in the front. Visitors can enter the bus, sit in the seats, and listen to Ms. Parks as she talks about that important day in Civil Rights history. Visitors can see the very first Ford Mustang, along with the 15 millionth Model T, too. There are several other vehicles made by automakers from the US, Europe, Japan, and other parts of the world.

Henry Ford After spending your time drooling over the cars of the past, there are plenty of other exhibit that are worth seeing. The museum honors all things that help people travel, so there are exhibits with locomotives and airplanes from days long past. Many of the exhibits are interactive with the goal of bringing history to life. Another unique exhibit is the Dymaxion House designed by R. Buckminster Fuller; this house is the last one remaining in the world today.

Once you have seen everything that the museum has to offer, the other locations are also worth visiting. Greenfield Village is a living museum with the actual homes of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Noah Webster, and more. You will be able to see how life in America changed through 300 years of history. The entire Henry Ford site is appropriate for children and adults. If you do visit, plan to spend at least one day at each location.
