Speedway Motors and SCCA Announce the CAM Schedule for 2015 for Muscle Cars that Turn

So you want to compete in your street-legal muscle car, but would really rather go more than 1,320 and have to use the steering wheel and brakes once in a while?

Well, the SCCA and Speedway Motors have something for you.

Introduced as a one-off event toward the end of the 2014 season to attract a whole new class of performance enthusiasts to SCCA Solo, the Classic American Muscle (CAM) category returns for 2015 with three events and again with sponsorship from Speedway Motors.

Open only to front-engine, rear-wheel drive American cars built from 1954 to the present, the CAM category is split among three classes under the SCCA’s 2015 rules: CAM-T (Traditional), CAM-C (Contemporary) and CAM-S (Sports). CAM-T is for body styles originating from 1954 through 1972, must have a 108 inch or longer wheelbase and must weigh at least 3,000 pounds and have a full interior that includes floor coverings. Typical CAM-T cars include first and second-gen Camaros and Firebirds, pre-’73 Mustangs and all Barracudas and Darts.

CAM-C incorporates body styles originating from 1978 through the present, but with a 100-inch minimum wheelbase and a 3,000 pound minimum weight, such as the 2004-06 Pontiac GTO and the more recent G8 as well as the current Chevrolet SS.

CAM-S steps up the performance a notch or two to include two-seat muscle cars, such as early Corvettes (for more modern Corvettes and Vipers, SCCA offers other options for competition), Cobras, AMXs and the like. With a minimum wheelbase of 90 inches and a minimum weight of 2,350 pounds, the CAM-S competition should really give purpose-built sports car a run for their money.

CAM competitors are allowed a fair degree of modification, particularly when it comes to the driveline, but, in addition to the class regs, all CAM cars must be street legal with full interiors and wear street tires with a 200 or higher treadwear rating. Trucks are also eligible to compete.

For 2015, three events are planned for the Speedway Motors Classic American Muscle Challenge: March 6-8, western regional event at Crows Landing near San Francisco, August 7-9, eastern regional at Grissom Air Force Base near Indianapolis and September 4-6, the Invitational Championship at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, the hometown of Speedway Motors, which bills itself at “America’s Oldest Speed Shop.”
