No, this is not a Jon Stewart throwaway line from The Daily Show. Borgward, according to several reports, is coming back. If you don’t remember that make of automobile, you’re excused. The final Borgward rolled off the assembly line in Bremen, Germany, in 1961. The founder’s grandson, Christian Borgward, says he has backing from Beiqi Foton, a Chinese truck manufacturer aligned with Daimler AG, to produce a new line of cars. More details will be forthcoming at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, scheduled for March 5-15.

The brand has been gone a long time, so some people may not remember that Borgward was once Germany’s third-largest producer of cars. It was founded in 1919 by Carl F.W. Borgward and produced more than a million cars in the German port city. Some were branded as Goliath or Lloyd, but Borgward was best known for building premium cars, including the Isabella, its most successful model. Automotive News Europe , citing German magazine AutoBild, reported that Beiqi Foton acquired the rights to the Borgward name early last year. While Borgward sources declined to comment, the magazine also reported that plans are for a line of five cars ranging from subcompact to midsize.

Borgward models were once a common sight on race tracks across Europe, and its publicity video for the company’s rebirth seems to emphasize this. Will we see Borgward use motorsports as a way of reestablishing itself in the global market? That depends upon just how deep the pockets of its new owners prove to be.
