eBay Listing: 1983 Land Rover Defender 110 2.25 Diesel In the jungles, the mighty jungles, Land Rovers roam tonight and their engines roar to life… The Land Rover series vehicles came about out of necessity in 1948. Post WWII England needed a rough and tough vehicle to export and garner some income for their then war torn country. The first prototype was built utilizing some components from a WWII era jeep. So in some ways you could say some good old “American Ingenuity” went into the first concept. If nothing else the first Land Rover Series I, inspired by a jeep, became the British equivalent that was rugged enough to challenge Jeep’s leadership. Onward to today’s vehicle of choice a left-hand drive 1983 Land Rover Defender that seems to be in pristine condition. In the USA and abroad, the Defender is looked at by many as the most notable successor of the Series I-III models for off-road exploits. It is about as rough and tough as you get this side of the Serengeti. A fun and interesting fact about the Defender is that it directly descends from the original Land Rover models and similar models have been in constant production for nearly sixty-seven years. This long time production will stop in December of 2015. We here at eBay Motors would like to send it out with a bang, and salute this plucky British made Defender for its off-roading capabilities and for being there for those who needed it most when the going got tough. Those expecting to find an interior similar to those found in Land Rover’s other models will be greatly disappointed. The Defender represents the definition of bare-bones, with a simplistic dashboard designed in the mid-1980s and a utilitarian cabin fashioned to be more easily swept out after a Serengeti trek. There are no airbags even with the updated Defender that is sold in other parts of the world does not have them. 1997 was the last year Land Rover sold the Defender in the USA due to increasingly stringent safety regulations and the low numbers that were sold. Now off-road enthusiasts and Land Rover stalwarts that recognize the Defender’s rugged capabilities seek them almost religiously because so few are available—in good or bad shape. Like we hinted at in the beginning, Land Rover vehicles and engines are jungle tested and jungle approved. The marque is synonymous worldwide with outstanding off-road capability, possibly second only to Jeeps and Land Cruisers. But given a choice in the Serengeti, or the Sahara, or on a Paris Dakar Rally, we’d be tempted to take a Land Rover Defender just like this one every time. Bid now to roam the mighty jungles in this Defender before the auction closes on Wednesday at 4 AM (PST). If there any doubts as to the Defender’s rugged strengths and off-road prowess, we invite to watch this movie that documents the last 10 years of the Camel Trophy races.
