Hemmings Find of the Day – 1969 AMC SC/Rambler

1969AMCSCRambler_01_1000

Cloning a SC/Rambler, though it looks easy on the surface, actually takes some very specific and rare parts, so it’s actually not that simple to build one that’ll fool the experts. Why not, then, build a restomod that looks like one at first glance, but incorporates selected upgrades here and there, as is the case with this 1969 AMC SC/Rambler for sale on Hemmings.com, powered by a built 401? From the seller’s description:

This 1969 SC/Rambler ‘Clone’ originally starting life as a 67 American Hardtop with a 6 cylinder 3 spd column shift drive train, this lifelong Arizona car made a great starting point to do a clone of the vaunted Rambler SC/Rambler (B-Scheme). The conversion started with swapping out all the original drive train, engine cross member and suspension with both SC/Rambler and/or modern AMC parts resulting in an affordable yet extraordinarily powerful tribute to the great limited production car it was fashioned after.

The engine is a purpose built street performance AMC 401 with high compression .030 over forged pistons in combination with big valve (1.68 exhaust and 2.025 intake) “090″ big chamber ported and polished AMC heads resulting in a pump gas friendly 9.5:1 compression ratio with hardened valve seats. A complete new valve train was added to a very manageable but great sounding street performance hydraulic split cam with a little over advertised .500 lift and slightly below 300 duration. An Edlebrock Torker intake and 800 CFM Edlebrock Thunder Series AVS carb rounded out the intake side of this engine while the rotating assembly was fully balanced. The 2011 engine rebuild included all new rings, bearings, seals, competition valve job, valve springs, retainers, locks and timing set. Crane Gold roller rockers, hardened pushrods and of course forged 401 high compression pistons with zero deck height round out the specs of the rebuild. The stock AMC distributor was recurved, Hooker SuperComp big tube headers were added and the exhaust system consists of 2 1/2″ pipes all the way back with crossover behind the header collectors. Approximately 3,000 miles on rebuild.

A 1967 2.64 1st gear wide ratio tranny in combination with the stock “Traction-Lock” posi SC/Rambler rear with 3.54 gears and Centerforce II clutch with the above fresh engine configuration produces mind numbing power that will plant you firmly into the seat and break the rear tires away in the first three gears on throttle alone. Every now and then an engine comes together to produce exceptional power and this is one of those cases where everything just works to produce extraordinary power and makes this car frighteningly fast with over 500 lb ft of torque and over 400 HP in a 2950 lb car.

Inside, the “SC/Rambler” retained some of its original features such as 67 door panels, 1/2 depth dash pad and silver over black dash trim. In addition, the factory AC was retained and upgraded to modern freon and new style Sandan AC compressor. An original style power steering box was added (SC/Ramblers have the hard to steer close ratio manual box) plus we added a tilt column (none of which were available with a SC/Rambler) making this car not only a roaring power house and blast to drive but more of refined cruiser as well.

Radio and windshield wipers are not functional. Front door panels need some repair. Hood and windows could use adjusting.
