The 4000-series 427 Cobras are known as Component Cars because they were sold by Shelby American to dealers without engines and transmissions, in order to skirt all of the regulations that new car manufacturers have to contend with. Shelby American dealers would then install the running gear for the customer who would drive off in a car that was very, very much like an original Cobra, complete with its own CSX serial number.
Shelby American started building Cobras again this way in 1997, and it continues today with the 6000 series 427 Cobras.
This 4000-Series Cobra, CSX4322, for sale on Hemmings.com is interesting because it is one of two “Phantom Cobras” built in 2003-2004 by Sanderson Sales and Marketing in Plano, Texas. The cars have a phantom cobra graphic painted on the body that’s visible only from certain angles, and this car has Carroll Shelby’s name “ghost painted” on the hood as well. A total of 10 cars were supposed to be built with this special paint treatment, but only two were completed. The first was finished for Shelby’s 80th birthday on January 11, 2003, and then the car crossed the block at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale a week later, selling for $151,500. The 427 Phantom Cobras were priced new from Sanderson for $150,000. A 289 version was available for $125,000.
CSX 4322 has the optional aluminum body and is powered by a Shelby 427 FE engine topped by an 850 Holley. A Ford toploader four-speed puts the power to an independent rear with 3.54:1 gears and the car rolls on Halibrands shod with Goodyear Eagles.
