A four-speed in an Ambassador? Definitely not common, but certainly possible, as we see from this unrestored 1966 AMC Ambassador 990 convertible for sale on Hemmings.com. From the description and the photos, it appears to remain largely original and in need of only minor items, none of which should have much of an impact on its driveability or showability for the upcoming season. From the seller’s description:
Marquessa Light Mauve over black vinyl and two-tone door cards with a white power top (have only seen this color on one other AMC). 62,436 believed-to-be original miles
AMC 327ci and Holley 650 4bbl 10:1 compression 270hp on premium fuel. Borg Warner T-10 four on the floor with narrow gate shifter in the console from the factory! VIN verified F-Code car. Twin-Grp limited lip differential. Factory AC runs but not cold and needs restoration
How it is: This is an amazing 10-foot car that shows its survival condition with grace and dignity. Super rare silvery mauve color paint is in very good condition with a few exceptions. Wire hubcaps with red R in the spinners are believed to be original as can be seen in a 1966 magazine ad that I have framed. 1966 was the year that AMC eliminated all old Rambler brand references so these caps would indicate that this car may be a very early 1966 model. Interior has been cleaned but not restored with the exception of the glove box liner, which is new. Most lights and gauges work! The clock works (how often do you see that?) but the blinker indicators do not. I think the connections behind the cluster need cleaning. Original vacuum top fuel pump has been removed to be sent out for rebuilding and a new manual pump without vacuum has been installed temporarily. Therefore, the vacuum-powered windshield wipers will not be operable until the rebuilt pump is installed. To be clear, the UN-rebuilt pump comes with the car. Passenger side visor pot-metal mount is cracked and will need repair or replacement. Pertronix point-less electronic ignition conversion and Pertronix 40,000 volt Flame a Thrower coil delivers powerful and reliable spark. About that spark, original era Packard spark plug wires are unshielded and now the AM radio has interference hum. New shielded wires will fix this problem. Carburetor was rebuilt summer 2013 but needs some tuning to produce a good steady idle. Radiator has a small leak that needs repair before driving any distance. Tires, brakes, steering, suspension, all work and behave like they should in a 48 year old car
Other stuff: You may not find another one optioned like this and that is no joke. These cars were marketed as Cadillac killers and usually were bought with automatic transmissions, power windows/seats etc. Aside from the factory AC, this car appears to have been ordered by an enthusiast, casting off those wimpy creature comforts for all the elements that make a quick and fast fun-in-the-sun cruiser.
There are issues expected of an unrestored car of this vintage but nothing catastrophic and I always get nothing but the highest praise on the road and at shows. It seems everybody’s Uncle had an old Rambler back in the day and they love to look at this car and reminisce. Includes collection of brochures, owner’s manuals, shop manuals and extra parts.
