Lexus’ 2015 appearance at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit is a showcase for performance. Not only is Lexus preparing the RC F GT3 Concept that debuted last year for – you guessed it – GT3 racing in 2015, but it’s giving the world a good look at its latest challenge to the superpowers of the high-performance sedan world: the all-new 2016 GS F. The 2016 GS F is the latest of the Lexus “F Sport” performance models, following in the tire tracks of the IS F sedan, LF A hypercar, and last year’s RC F coupe. Powering the 2016 GS F is a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter DOHC V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle-shifters. The V8 produces 467 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque, which are impressive numbers. They fall short of its German and American competitors, but Lexus claims a weight advantage over “key German competitors” of more than 300 lbs. (the GS F weighs 4,034 lbs.) Despite the heft, the GS F aims at being a more nimble machine, with an exclusive suspension system including a rear Torque-Vectoring Differential (TVD) tuned during testing at the Nürburgring. The 2016 GS F makes a value play for itself through the inclusion of technology like a Remote Touch-controlled 12.3-inch monitor and Lexus’ Safety System+ suite of electronic assists—which includes a Pre-Collision System, Radar Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and more. The GS F’s V8 even makes an attempt at fuel efficiency by using the Atkinson Cycle in certain driving conditions. No word on pricing or when exactly it’ll hit dealerships, but the 2016 Lexus GS F stands to provide an interesting alternative for consumers in the luxury performance sedan segment.
