VW Crossover Concept Previews at 2015 Detroit Auto Show

VW Cross Coupé GTE Concept at 2015 NAIAS DetroitHot on the heels of its Golf being named the North American Car of the Year (having found out about the award literally three hours before the company’s presentation began), Volkswagen brought out a new vision of a future crossover at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Cross Coupé GTE Concept is the latest in a series of vehicles seen at shows over the past few years, each of which has shown consistent refinement of design and technology. A five-passenger crossover based on a seven-passenger SUV that Volkswagen says will hit the U.S. market in 2016, the Cross Coupé GTE Concept is a plug-in hybrid built upon the MQB platform. Powering the Cross Coupé GTE Concept is a 3.6-liter VR6 six-cylinder engine making 276 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, along with a 54-horsepower/162 lb-ft electric motor assisting the front wheels and a 114-horsepower/199 lb-ft motor powering the rear wheels. In total, the system output is 355 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen says the Cross Coupé GTE Concept can run from 0-60 MPH in six seconds and achieve 70 MPG, with a purely electric driving mode allowing drivers to travel up to 20 miles without emissions of any kind. Inside, the Cross Coupé GTE Concept shows off Volkswagen’s new gesture-controlled infotainment system, which it says is “the future” of such installations. Features like Apple Play, Android Audio, and Mirrorlink are all expected to factor into the new infotainment system as well. Look for most of these features on the coming seven-passenger SUV from Volkswagen, with a production version of the Cross Coupé GTE Concept to be released after.
