While an array of handbuilt scale model vehicles that participated in General Motors’s Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild contests makes for an intriguing display at any full-size car event, it’s only natural that they share table space with some of the country’s best model cars, which is why a number of guild members will take their guild models to the upcoming GSL International Scale Vehicle Model Championship and Convention.
Not officially considered a reunion like the 2004, 2008, and 2013 gatherings of Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild members, the GSL display will still gather about a dozen guildsmen as well as a couple dozen models in the convention hall, said John Jacobus, organizer of the display, former guildsman, and author of two books on the guild: Inside the Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild: Contestants Recall the Great General Motors Talent Search and The Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild: An Illustrated History .
“We hope to have a strong presence, with a cross-section of national, regional, and state models,” Jacobus said. “We had to limit each participating member to two models each, otherwise they’d take up the entire exhibit with their memorabilia – we’ve kinda gotta control their enthusiasm when it comes to this.”
Jacobus said that in addition to presenting the display, he’s also put together a presentation that will include personal experiences from some of the guild members in attendance and has compiled several volumes of memorabilia to donate to the International Model Car Builders’ Museum.
While this will be the first group display of guild members’s models at a national model car show, Jacobus said he has helped arrange for individual guild members to showcase their models at regional model car shows in the past. “Those have always been interesting and well received, and in return, we’ve gotten to see these model car builders’ creativity.”
Created in 1979 to encourage competition among model car builders on the merits of craftsmanship and technical innovation, the GSL International Scale Vehicle Championship also includes a trade show; seminars; presentations from the International Model Car Builders’ Museum in Sandy, Utah; and a hall of fame induction ceremony. Nominees for this year’s hall of fame class include George Barris and Darryl Starbird in the Industry Insider category and author Bob Downie and scratchbuilder Greg Nichols in the Builder/Writer category.
The 25th annual GSL International Scale Vehicle Model Championship and Convention will take place April 30 to May 3 in Salt Lake City, Utah. For more information, visit GSLChampionship.org.
